Published knotless-braid guides commonly place medium braids around 4–5 packs at shoulder length, 5–6 at mid-back, 6–8 at waist length, and 8–10 at butt length. Those numbers are only useful when the “pack” being discussed is roughly comparable to the product you are buying.
| Finished length | Common medium-knotless range | If packs are 100g |
|---|---|---|
| Shoulder | 4–5 packs | ~400–500g |
| Mid-back | 5–6 packs | ~500–600g |
| Waist | 6–8 packs | ~600–800g |
| Butt / tailbone | 8–10 packs | ~800–1,000g |
Why your number can be different
Head circumference, natural hair density, desired fullness, how blunt or tapered you want the ends, and the braider's feed-in technique can all move you within or outside a generic range.
“Six packs” is not a measurement
If one product is 52g per pack and another is 100g, six packs means 312g in the first case and 600g in the second. That is why HairMetric's calculator estimates grams first.
Medium waist-length example
For medium waist-length knotless braids, a common published range is 6–8 packs. If the product really contains 100g per pack, that translates to roughly 600–800g before personal adjustments. If the product contains only 50g, the same gram target would require roughly twice as many packs.
